The Brief
The Kingsford - Preserve The Pit project was an 8-week initiative to promote the history and future of Black barbecue through a dedicated campaign and landing page on Kingsford.com. As a Senior User Experience Designer, I led a team comprising a Project Manager, Front-end Developer, Art Director, and Account Director to design an interactive platform that told the story of the "Preserve the Pit" program and facilitated the application process for an exclusive fellowship.

The Problem
The primary challenge was to develop a compelling landing page that effectively communicated the purpose of the "Preserve the Pit" fellowship, engaged the target audience, and provided a seamless application process. This initiative was crucial for Kingsford to demonstrate its commitment to celebrating the legacy of Black barbecue and supporting the next generation of pitmasters.

The Process
Strategy Development
With insights from our research, the team engaged in multiple brainstorming sessions and stakeholder meetings to define our campaign strategy. This involved collaboration with internal copywriters and strategists to craft a narrative that resonated with our audience, highlighting the importance of preserving the legacy of Black barbecue culture and the impact of the fellowship program.
The strategy phase also included defining the user journey on the landing page, ensuring that the story of the Preserve the Pit program was compelling and easily navigable, and encouraging users to apply for the fellowship.
Design & Prototyping
The design process was iterative, starting with low-fidelity sketches to outline the basic structure and flow of the landing page. These sketches were then translated into detailed wireframes, which served as the blueprint for the page layout, content placement, and user interaction points.
Using Figma, we developed high-fidelity wireframes that incorporated the visual elements of the Kingsford brand, ensuring consistency and a visually appealing interface. These wireframes were then transformed into interactive prototypes using Protopie, allowing us to simulate user interactions and refine the user experience across desktop and mobile breakpoints.
Content Development and Integration
Parallel to the design process, our team worked closely with copywriters to develop compelling content that told the story of the Preserve the Pit program. This included long-form storytelling to engage users emotionally and informational content about the fellowship application process.

Reflections & Learnings
Personally, the project was a fulfilling experience, connecting my family's barbecue traditions with my professional expertise. It underscored the importance of thorough research and collaborative strategy in storytelling and user experience design. One significant challenge was coordinating the site's launch with offline media partners and events, which required agile problem-solving and flexibility. This experience has reinforced the value of interdisciplinary teamwork and the impact of UX design in bringing cultural and business goals to fruition.
