The Brief

The project aimed to redesign existing BK kiosks to include Storm-interface devices, enhancing accessibility and ensuring compliance with ADA standards. This initiative aimed to improve user experience for current users and make the application accessible to individuals with disabilities.

The Problem

The primary challenge was that the existing BK kiosks lacked compatibility with STORM devices, specifically keypad and audio navigation, making them inaccessible to users with disabilities. Additionally, the kiosk's ordering application failed to meet ADA requirements due to its sole reliance on touch-based interaction.

The Process

I addressed these issues with our engineering team and the hardware device maker. We aimed to develop a seamless integration of the STORM interface into the kiosk application. This involved creating instructional content for screen readers and developing a contextual audio generation system for interface elements. Throughout this process, I documented our findings and worked closely with the engineering team to ensure rigorous testing and quality assurance of the new accessibility features.

The Results

The project culminated in successfully deploying BK kiosks with integrated STORM devices, significantly enhancing accessibility. This initiative made the kiosks compliant with ADA standards and expanded their usability to a broader audience. Additionally, the project established a new in-house standard for kiosk accessibility, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and user-centered design.

Reflections & Learnings

This project was a profound learning experience, deepening my understanding of accessibility in design and the importance of considering diverse user needs. Meeting the founder of the STORM-interface device company provided invaluable insights into the significance of such devices for people with disabilities. This encounter profoundly influenced my design philosophy, instilling a proactive approach to incorporating accessibility into my design thinking.
